Pathogen

Disease producing microorganisms.

Virulence

Capable of causing serious disease.

Major groups of microorganisms

Bacteria-


Gram positive/ negative- bacteria that are stained by dye is gram positive. Bacteria that has no stain is gram negative.


Shapes


Spherical( cocci)- produced by dividing into two.


Rod (bacill)- rod ahaped, i.e. tuberculosis.


Spiral (spirochetes)- spiral shaped with flexible walls and are capable of movement.


Aerobe/anerobe- aerobe is bacteria that requires oxygen.


Anerobe does not.


Capsuels- serves as a protective layer that covers the cell wall.


Spores- bacteria that remains alive in a store but remain inactive.


Algae- contaminated chlorophyll as well as pigments to appear yellow green, brown and red.


Protozoa- consists of a large group of one celled organisms that do not have a rigid cell wall.


Fungi- organisms such as mushrooms yeasts and moulds that lack chlorophyll.


Prions- small proteinaceous infections particles. Proteins that lack nucleic acid.


Viruses- are smaller than bacteria. Many cause fatal disease.

Hepatitis

Type A- anyone, person to person through putting something in mouth that has been contaminated from school of another person with hepatitis A.


Type B- is a prolonged illness that can cause liver cancer, cirrhosis of the liver , liver failure and death. Is transferred by body fluids.


Type C- transferred by blood transfusion or dirty needles. Treatments are available to control the effects.


Type D- you have to have hepatitis B to get hepatitis D.


Type E- it is from the fecal oral route. And it is mostly in developing countries.

HIV

It is a blood borne disease. It breaks down the immune system. It is a sexually transmitted disease.

Herpes virus

A double-stranded DNA virus that causes herpes chicken pox and measles.


Type 1- infection that causes reoccurence sores on lips aka cold sore.


Type 2- genital herpes. It is the most common STD. Once infected outbreaks will reoccur.


Herpes zoster- causes both varicella aka chicken pox and zoster aka shingles.


Cytomegalovirus- can affect fetus during pregnancy.


Epstein barr- responsible for mono and lymphoma.

Severe acute respiratory virus

H1N1 (swime flu)- respiratory disease. Spreads rapidly from person to person.

Tuberculosis

The leading cause of death from infectious diseases worldwide. HIV and TB often occur together.

Legionnaire's

It's transmitted through aerosolization, and aspiration of contaminated water

Tetanus

It is dangerous and fatal disease. Is caused by spore forming bacillus found in soil, dust, or animal or human feces. It is introduced through a wound or break in the skin.
