Biom
A Major terrestrial or aquatic life zone, characterized by vegetation in terrestrial biomes
and physical environment in aquatic biomes.
Fresh Water Biom
salt less than 1%
Lakes, ponds, river, streams, wetlands
Marine Biomes
Salt greater than 3%
Oceans, intertidal zones, coral reef, estuaries
Benthic Realm
bottom of all aquatic biomes. Made up of sand and organic and inorganic sediments.
Occupied by Benthos (squishy)
Wetland
transitional biome between an aquatic ecosystem and terrestrial one.
Photic Zone
depth of the water in a lake or ocean that is exposed to sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis to occur.
Aphotic Zone
the portion of a lake or ocean where there is little or no sunlight. It is formally defined as the depths beyond which less than 1% of sunlight penetrates.
Threats Lakes/Ponds
Large inputs of fertilizers and sewage Increase algae growth which causes decreased light penetration and oxygen.
Rivers and Streams
Upstream: clear, cold, swift, little nutrients. Supported by algae on rocks.

Downstream: Murky, warmer, slower, and higher in nutrients due to Phytoplankton.
Threats to Rivers
Pollution

Dams- alter rate + volume of water

Plant communities

Plant and animal populations

Salmon spawning
Lakes, Ponds
Communities of plants, algae,, and animals distributed by depth of water and distance from shore. Mineral nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus regulate amount of phytoplankton.
Phytoplankton
Photosynthetic algae and bacteria that provide energy for community
ZooPlankton
Free-floating animals, including many microscopic ones. Provide energy for community
pelagic realm
open water of the oceans
Coral Reefs
Biome that occurs in the photic zone of warm tropical waters in scattered locations around the globe
Intertidal zone
Where the ocean meets land, the shore is pounded by waves during high tide and exposed to the sun and drying winds during low tide.
Estuaries
Transition area between a river and the ocean. Among most productive ares on Earth; biodiversity
