Ecology
The study of the interactions that take place between organisms and their environment
Biotic Factors
anything living (plants, animals)
Abiotic Factors
non living (water, air, minerals, temperature,ect...)
Biosphere
the global ecosystem
Organismal Ecology
The study of EVOLUTIONARY ADAPTATIONS that enable individual ORGANISMS to meet the challenges posed by their ABIOTIC environments.
Population Ecology
Study of POPULATION DENSITY & GROWTH
Community Ecology
The study of how INTERACTIONS between SPECIES, such as predation and competition, AFFECT community structure and organization.
Ecosystem Ecology
The cycling of energy and matter through the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem.
Four Laws of Ecology
1.Everything is connected to everything else
2.Everything must go somewhere 3.Nature knows best 4.There is no such thing as a free lunch |
ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
1. LOE- Every is connected to everything else
There is one ecosphere for all living organisms.
WHAT AFFECTS ONE AFFECTS ALL. Humans and other species are connected/dependant on a number of other species. |
2. LOE- Everything must go somewhere
There is no "AWAY" to which things can be THROWN. Ex: burn wood, doesn't disappear, turns into smoke which rises into the air, and ash, which falls back down to the earth.
3. LOE- Nature knows best
Humankind uses technology to improve upon nature, but such a change is likely to be DETRIMENTAL to that system.
Ex: loss of wetlands for water purification technologies. Flooding |
4. LOE- No Such Thing as a Free Lunch
All our ACTIONS will have CONSEQUENCES - pollution
Exploitation of nature will lead to once useful resources becoming USELESS. |
