Why did each side go to war?
South: to protect their homeland and because they needed the slaves for the cotton industry.
North: to preserve the Union.
Why was President Lincoln unhappy with General McClellan?
He didn't act fast enough.
What did the Emancipation Proclamation provide? How did it change the nature of the war?
Freedom for slaves. The Northerners were now fighting not only to save the Union, but to free the slaves. The Southerners thought Lincoln was a fiend for destroying expensive property.
Why did some northerners object to the draft law? What was the response to the draft law in the South?
Because they thought the African Americans were taking their jobs and they were being forced to free them so that they could take their jobs.
The southerners were mad because if you had few or no slaves, you could be drafted. If you were rich you would not.
How did the Union wage total war on the South in 1864 and 1865?
They destroyed everything in their path so that Southerners had nothing to come back to.
strengths and weaknesses of N. and S.
South: Strong: knew lay of the land, they had played defense instead of offense, better terrain like woods. weaknesses: small population, each state was its own country, few factories and railroads.
North: strengths: railroads, better economy, factories, and citizens. weaknesses: their lines thinning out over time because they had so much land to cover.
Lincoln's attitudes toward slavery and the war.
Lincoln thought slavery was wrong. He hated war.
Union blockade of Southern ports
Trade in the South was decreased by 90%. The Confederacy was never able to break the blockade.
Grant's treatment of Confederate Army at Appomattox
He let them go home in peace after they put their rifles in a pile. And he did not kill their horse because he knew they needed them for spring plowing.
