FOVEA
Small depression in the center of the macula

Area of greatest visual acuity

Lies directly opposite the pupil
CILIARY BODY
Extension of choroid layer

Posterior to iris

Has muscles that change shape of lens

Produces aqueous humor

Contains ligaments that keep lens in place behind iris
RETINA
Membrane lining the posterior cavity

Contains rods and cones

Includes optic disk and macula
OPTIC DISK
Bright yellow-white circle on the retina where optic nerve and retinal arteries enter posterior cavity

Cannot perceive visual images

Known as the blind spot
OPTIC NERVE
Cranial Nerve II

A sensory nerve that carries nerve impulses of visual images from the rods and cones of the retina to the visual cortex of the brain

Enters the eye at the optic disk
MACULA
Dark yellow-orange area with indistinct eges in the retina

Contains the fovea
SCLERA
White, tough, fibrous connective tissue that forms the outer layer around most of the eye
LACRIMAL SAC
Small structure that collects tears as they drain from the medial aspect of the eye

Empties into the nasolacrimal duct
LENS CAPSULE
Clear membrane that envelopes the lens
CONJUNCTIVA
Delicate, transparent mucuos membraine that covers the inside of the eyelids and the anterior surface of the eye

Produces clear, watery mucus
LACRIMAL GLAND
Produces and releases tears through the lacrimal ducts

Located near the superior lateral aspect of the eye
TRABECULAR MESHWORK
Area of interlacing fibers through which aqueous humor is filtered

Located in the anterior chamber in the angle where the edges of cornea and iris meet
AQUEOUS HUMOR
Clear watery fluid produced by ciliary body

Circulates through posterior and anterior chambers

Takes nutrients and oxygen to the cornea and lens
SEBACEOUS (MEIBOMIAN) GLANDS
Oil glands at the edges of the eyelids
NASOLACRIMAL DUCT
Tube that carries tears from the lacrimal sac to the inside of the nose
ORBIT
Bony socket in the cranium that surrounds all but the anterior part of the eyeball

Eye socket
OPTIC GLOBE
The eyeball
SUPERIOR RECTUS MUSCLE
Turns the eye superiorly
INFERIOR RECTUS MUSCLE
Turns the eye inferiorly
MEDIAL RECTUS MUSCLE
Turns the eye medially
