+ 189,000 African Americans served in the American Army or Navy.

+ The Union Army was crushed at Chancellorsville to an Army half the size. (Confederacy won at Chancellorsville)


+ In Fredericksburg, Burnside ordered attack after attack. Union lost 13k. Confederacy lost 5k.

Describe the events of the Battle of Gettysburg. How was Pickett’s Charge significant?

Day One: They encountered some Union troops, shots were fired, Confederates had pushed the Union out of Gettysburg.


Day 2: fought at Cemetery and Seminary Ridge.


Day 3: Lee ordered an all out attack on Meade’s center line. General Pickett led 15k men across nearly mile long open field toward Union line, but only couple hundred made it. About 7500 men were killed or wounded in what is now known at Pickett’s Charge.

Understand the significance of the Fall of Vicksburg.

+ Vicksburg was the last city held by Confederacy on the Mississippi River, before they lost the battle.


+ The Confederates then had to resort to eating rats and mule because they had no other food.

Understand the purpose of the March to the Sea.

+ Sherman marched eastward toward Atlantic Ocean.


+ On the way, they burned buildings, seized crops and livestock, and lifted railroad tracks.

What were the conditions of the treaty of Appomattox?

+ April 2, Richmond was in Union hands.


+ April 9, Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Confederates were offered generous terms. “Leave now in peace and surrender weapons.”
