Position self at eye level to patient, 2 feet away. Ask pt. to cover one eye and look at you with the other. Cover your own eye directly across from pt's covered eye. Flick finger midline from several different angles of PERIPHERY, asking patient to identify when he sees the finger first.

Confrontation Test

Checks for parallel ALIGNMENT. Person should stare straight ahead. Shine light from about 12 inches away, noting the reflection of the light on the corneas. Light should be in the same spot on each eye.

ALIGNMEN.
Stare straight ahead at examiner's nose. Examiner interrupts the view of one eye with card. Uncovered eye should stay steady. Remove card and watch other eye. If it jumps to regain focus and match the other eye, then muscle weakness is there. |
Cover Test

Bring penlight in from the side, and observe for consensual contraction of pupils.

Pupillary Light Reflex Test

|
Hold finger twelve inches away from pt's eyes. Lead the gaze in the SIX CARDINAL DIRECTIONS ( - & X). Note smooth tracking. Nystagmus is a tremor (normal at extreme lateral position). Check for lid lag.
