Orange Revolution

Massive protest against the Ukranian presidential election results. Pro democratic, pro Western opposition was favoured by middle class. The people dressed in Yushenkos campaign colour🍊 and peacefully demanded a re-election. Parliament and the Supreme Court declared original election invalid and re-election held(Other countries closely monitored proceedings)


The Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa

Apartheid: Strict legislated racial segregation and discrimination


-Interactions between Africans and Europeans settlers were violent, distrustful, and hateful.


-South Africans trying to end it viewed themselves as liberation movements(ANC, PAC)

African National Congress and pan-Africanist Congress

ANC- Nelson Mandela president of organization.


PAC-Lead by Robert Sobukwe and only focused on Blacks(not white minorities as well)



Peaceful protest using laws and civil disobedience(sit-ins, boycotts,strikes). Government first ignored them, then open fired. Had to result in terrorist-like protests. Other countries enacted trade restrictions eventually forcing the government to reduce and eventually extinguish policies of apartheid.

Post-Apartheid Africa

Truth Reconciliation Commission was created- addressed countries racist past- encouraged victims to come forward(last step towards democracy)
