Conflict in England between Puritans and Anglicans

Puritans wanted a church consisting of self governing congregations, for Kings to rule in court with parliament. Elizabeth and her successors insisted on an Anglican church appointed by traditional catholic heirarchy.

James I

King James, Mary Stuarts son, rose to the throne upon the end of the Tudor line. He had no love for parliament and did whatever he could to gain money for the monarch without raising taxes, for this he would have to answer to parliament. He also despised the puritans.

A bible written in the vernacular.

Puritan response to King James

Some puritans gave up hope on England and settled in the Netherlands and North America, their colony was known as Plymouth.

Charles I (r.1625-1649)

James I's son, shared his father contempt for Parliament. Suspected of being a catholic at heart. When he tried to impose an Anglican prayer book on Scotland's presbyterians they invaded England.

Parliaments growing control

Unable to raise an worthy army without parliament, he was forced to consort with parliament being unable to hold the Scots back. They began to put in place acts that curtailed the kings control.

Civil War

Charles rallies royalist forces to disband parliament. For four years 1642-1646 England was plunged into civil war.

New model Army

1645. An army that was led by officers that were promoted for merit instead of aristocracy, very effective.

Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658)

A brilliant military strategist of the New model Army.

Battle of Naseby

1645, the kings army is broken. He escapes to Scotland and surrenders to them where he is held for almost a year before handed over to England. He escapes again, again loses and is beheaded for treason.

England's republic

England becomes a republic and unable to reconsile parliament disbands it, Cromwell becomes lord protector. He suppressed radical levelers and Anglicans and dealt harshly with critics.

Levelers

Demanded that parliament be dissolved, that every male citizen should vote for a new parliement, and freedom of religion.

Cromwells death

Cromwell uses his army to maintain order, he died in 1658. His son Richard briefly rules before king Charles I's son, Charles II, is called back from exile in France. Parliament is promised a position in the new monarchy and England starts to become a constitutional monarchy.
