What should you ask client about goals?
short term? long term? motivations? what's important to you? what exercise did you do before? what did you like/dislike? what actities do you enjoy now? what is favorite exerixe? how will you integrate exerices? how much time are you willing to commit? what support? what are you good at? did you already know you were good at it? when was the last time you exercised regularly and how long did it last? why did it stop?
Describe past, present and future emphasized goals
Be all you used to be (past)
Be better now (present)
Be all you can be (future)
How to address clients who emphasize the PAST goals?
focus on positive feelings associated with time when client was a certain weight or engaged in a certain activity- they may not be able to achieve it practically, but focus on feeling; there is a high risk of frustration and noncompliance with this type of goal
How to address clients who emphasize PRESENT goals?
not just medical issues, but desire to live long enough to play with grandkids, etc; others may have short term goal to look good for an event or be in shape for an activity; try to get them to keep setting new goals, new sense of physical competency may create new goals
How to address clients who emphasize FUTURE goals?
A longer timeline and focus such as triathlon; you should help client prioritize smaller goals and behaviors that are required; the goals themselves are secondary to the feelings associated with the goals
Why do client goals matter?
Because the goals connect with client values and lasting motivation comes from within
What challenges will clients with intrinsic motivation face?
Others may not be supportive of their goals and new choices
What should you do if client has extrinsic motivation only?
Identify that client really has intrinsic motivation of internally satisfying others; help client reframe goals in terms of intrinsic motivation for long term success
Why should you transform large goals into smaller goals?
1) overly general or unrealistic goals demotivate and overwhelm people 2) small goals direct energy to manageable actions and tasks 3) provides clearer picture/roadmap for success
How can you help client set more specific and realistic goals?
What would be the 1st thing you would do in the morning if you were more fit? what activities would you engage in ? with whom? how would you spend your free time?
What are main characteristics of small goals?
They must be meaningful to the client and be within immediate reach; client needs to discover what fitness means to her by providing her own definitions in clear specif terms relating to the experience of living in a healthy body
