Sealing methods for sterile packaging that allow user to determine if the packaging has been open.

Muslin

Broad term describing a wide variety of plain-weave cotton or cotton/polyester fabrics having an approximately 140 threads per square inch

Superheating

The condition that arises when steam is at a temperature which exceeds that of saturated steam at the same pressure.

Linen packs have a maximum density that must not exceed what

7.2 pounds member per cubic foot

Rigid Container System

Instrument containers that hold medical devices during sterilization and also protect devices from contamination during storage and transport.

Wet Pack

Containers with moisture (inadequate drying) after the sterilization process is completed.

A method of stock rotation that ensures that older items are used first.

FIFO

Minimum amount of time that packaging materials should be held at room temperature and at 35%-75% relative humidity before sterilization

2 Hrs

SMS(spunbond-meltblown-spunbond)

A non-woven packaging material which is the most popular flat wrap.

Two basic types of combination peel-pouches

Paper/plastics combinations(use for steam and ethylene oxide sterilization)

spunbond polyolefin-plastics combinations (used for gas plasma sterilization)

Wicking material

An approved absorbent material that allows for air removal, steam penetration and facilities drying.

Sequential

Flat wrapping technique that applies one wrap on top of another to create a package within a package

FDA

Government agency that regulates sterilization packaging materials

Spunbound Polyoefin Plastic combinations

This type of packaging contains no cellulosic materials and would be used to package small items for low temperature sterilization

Aluminum Foil

This type of packaging can be used in dry heat sterilization but it's not recommended for other types of sterilization

When using paper/plastic pouches packaging content information should be written on this side of the pouch

Plastic

This is NOT an acceptable method of package closure.

Paper Clips

Muslin is an example of this type of packaging material

Reusable

Label information should include the following:

. Description of package contents

. Initials of package assembler

. Lot control number

. Identification of sterilizer and cycle to be used

. Date of sterilization(unless inherent in lot control number)

. Requesting Department or the surgeon's named(special request items) may also be included on the label

. Assign storage location to prevent items from being misplaced

Sterility(time-related)

A package is considered sterile until a specific expiration date is reached

Sterility(event-related)

Items are considered sterile unless the Integrity of the packaging is compromised damaged or suspected of being compromised damage regardless of the sterilization date

Storage temperature rooms should be between

64°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) with less than 75% humidity.

Packs should be kept how many inches above the floor to prevent contamination

8-10inches
