axis
The segment whose endpoints are the centers of the circular bases of a cylinder.
bases
a line or surface on which a figure is regarded as standing.
circular cone
A cone which has a circle as base.
cone
A three-dimensional figure with one circular base and one vertex. A curved surface connects the base and the vertex.
corner view
The view of a three-dimensional figure from the corner.
cross section
A view into the inside of a three dimensional figure made by cutting through it.
cylinder
A solid figure whose bases are formed by congruent circles in parallel planes and whose lateral surface is curved.
edges
The intersections of faces of a three-dimensional figure.
face
Any of the individual surfaces of a solid three dimensional figure.
great circle
For a given sphere, the intersection of the sphere and a plane that contains the center of the sphere.
hemisphere
One of the two congruent parts into which a great circle separates a sphere.
lateral area
The surface area of a cone, a cylinder, a prism, or a pyramid, not including the bases.
lateral edges
The edges at which lateral faces intersect.
lateral faces
All faces on a three dimensional figure that are not the base(s).
net
A two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional figure that can be folded to form the figure.
oblique cone
A cone with a vertex at the tip of said cone that is not aligned above the center of the base. The cone, consequently, does not have an axis that is also an altitude.
oblique cylinder
A cylinder that does not have an axis that is also an altitude.
oblique prism
A prism that does not have lateral edges that are also altitudes.
orthogonal drawing
The two-dimensional top view, left view, front view, and right view of a three-dimensional object.
perspective view
See "corner view."
Platonic solids
The five regular polyhedra: tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron, or icosahedron.
polyhedron
A solid with four or more flat surfaces that are polygonal regions.
prism
A solid that has two faces, called bases, that are formed by congruent polygons that lie in parallel planes, as well as lateral faces (parallelogram faces that are not bases) and lateral edges (the intersection of two adjacent lateral faces at a parallel segment).
pyramid
A solid with the following characteristics:
1.
All the faces, except one, intersect at a common point called the vertex.
2.
The face that does not intersect at the vertex is called the base. The base is formed by a polygon.
3.
The faces meeting at the vertex are called lateral faces. They are formed by triangles.
reflection symmetry
A type of symmetry where one half is the reflection of the other half.
regular polyhedron
A polyhedron in which the faces are regular congruent polygons.
regular prism
A right prism with bases that are regular polygons.
regular pyramid
A pyramid whose base is a regular polygon and in which the segment from the vertex to the center of the base is the altitude.
right cone
A cone with an axis that is also an altitude.
right cylinder
A cylinder with an axis that is also an altitude.
right prism
A prism with lateral edges that are also altitudes.
slant height
The altitude or height of each lateral face of a pyramid.
sphere
In space, the set of all points that are a given distance from a given point, called the center.
