amenorrhea

Violet-bluish color of the vagina and cervix that results from secretion of estrogen, increasing vascularity to these areas during pregnancy
chloasma
darkened pigmentation of the face, usualy across the nose and cheeks, which sometimes occurs during pregnacy; also called melasma or the ''mask off pregnancy"
diastasis
Separation of the recti abdominis muscles along the median line

The uppermost portion of the uterus, above the point of insertion of the fallopian tubes
Goodell's sign
Softening of the ccervix that develops during the second month of pregnancy; caused by increased vascularity, hypertrophy, and hyperpasia in the area.
Hegar's sign
Softening of the isthmus, the area between the cervix and the body of the uterus, that occurs approximately the 6th to 8th week of gestation.
Leopold Manoeuvres
A systematic approach of external palpation used to determine feta position and presentation

Asymptomatic, normal mucous discharge form the vagina and cervix throughout pregnancy

A lay term describing settement of the fetal presenting part into the maternal pelvis
linea nigra
A dark line that appears from the sternum to the pubis in some pregnant women, caused by increased secretion of the pituitary melanin- stimulating hormone.
lordosis
an abnormal forward curvature of the spine in the lumbar region, as the women attempts to maintain a centre of gravîty
Montgomery tubercles
Elevated sebaceous glands of the areola that appear during middle to late pregnancy. They secrete a protective lipid substance during lactation
morning sickness
Nausea and vomiting that is usually limited to the first trimester of pregnancy, although it may continue beyond this.

A woman who has been pregnant prior to the current pregnancy
Naegele's rule
Method of estimating the expected date of delivery by subtracting 3 months and adding 7 days to the first day of the woman's last norma menstrual period.

Amniotic fluid less than 300mL or an amniotic fluid index of 5 cm or less

Feta movements felt by they mother herself at approximately 18 to 20 weeks' gestation in a primigravida, or 16 to 18 weeks' gestation in the mutligravida
striae gravidarum
Pink or reddish streaks that appear on the sides and lower abdomen as a result of stretching of the connective layer of skin; commonly referred to as "stretch marks"
Supine postural hypotension syndrome
Hypotension and dizziness that occur when a pregnant woman lies on her back, resulting from compression of the vena cava agianst the spine
Teratogen
Any biologic, physica, chemical or radiologic agent that causes structural or functional damage to a fetus
