John C. Calhoun

The vice president under Andrew Jackson, he was from South Carolina and competed with Martin Van Buren (New York). Calhoun intended to protect southern interest, especially slavery, against Northern industrialization and abolitionism.

South Carolina Exposition and Protest

Written by John C. Calhoun, it opposed the Tariff of 1828 which interfere with cotton exports in the South. The reality of it was to check the most extreme states' rights advocates, stating that notification stop short of succession from Union.

Webster - Hayne Debate

A debate over unsettled government land to the west, the South claimed the North was attempting to slow the settling that they could have cheap factory labor and political leverage. Webster (North) had the better argument, but the foot revolution dissipated anyway, Webster claimed that states could not act separately of the national government.

Tariff of 1832

Criticized by Southerners claimed it favored the industrial North at the expense of the agricultural South. Furthered tensions between North and South.

Force Bill

An authorization for the use of force to make an area comply with federal law. This was used against South Carolina after they attempted nullification. Although Jackson already had the power, congressional approval strengthened his hand, the nullification was revoked, upholding the supremacy of the Union.

Osceola

The leader of a resistance in the South made of Seminoles and Cherokees against white settlement. The uprising waned after Osceola was captured and left to die.

Trail of Tears

Georgia attempted to expel the Cherokee from their land of the government to do nothing to this "distinct political community". The Cherokees agreed to leave for a western land grant but millions died on the Trail of Tears leading there.

Worcester v. Georgia

Georgia fought to take over land that the Cherokees held. In Worcester vs Georgia, the Supreme Court decided that Georgia law had no force and was unconstitutional.

Nicholas Biddle

The manager of the Bank of the United States under Andrew Jackson, he faced rechartering the bank. He wanted a stable economy backed by specie and had to preserve its growth but faced the unwavering opposition of the President.

Anti-Masonic Party

This was the first third party to enter presidential race. His advantage was that it was the first of its kind, it was the first to hold a national nominating convention, and was the first to announce a platform.

Pet Banks

State banks; they gained the benefit of federal deposits at the orders of Andrew Jackson. When the Federal Bank rebelled, the state banks plunged into debt that cause speculative mania.

Panic of 1837

New York banks suspended gold and silver payments on their bank notes, causing fears of bankruptcy. Also the collapse of cotton prices set off a depression that the economy could not recover from until the 1840s.

Whig Party

This party opposed the policies of Andrew Jackson and became widely popular among Congress. They were mostly in favor, like Henry Clay, of economic nationalism. They also stood for social reforms such as abolition and temperance.

Spoils System

Whigs criticized Jackson for a "spoils system" which accepted bribes in exchange for government positions. This led to a corrupt government.
