What is a bulla?

Primary lesion. A large blister containing watery fluid. Similar to a vesicle but larger.

What is a macule?

A primary lesion. A flat spot or discoloration on the skin.

What is a nodule?

A primary lesion. These are often referred to as tumors, but they are smaller bumps caused by conditions such as scar tissue, fatty deposits or infections.

What is a papule?

A primary lesion. A small elevation on the skin that contains no fluid, but may develop into a pustule.

What is a pustule?

A primary lesion. An inflamed papule with a white or yellow center containing pus.

What is a crust?

A secondary lesion. Dead cells formed over a wound or blemish while it is healing, resulting in an accumulation of sebum and pus.

What is a comedo?

A build up of cells, sebum, and other debris inside follicles.

What is a carbuncle?

A group of boils.

What is seborrhea?

Severe oiliness of the skin.

What is a steatoma?

A sebaceous cyst or subcutaneous tumor filled with sebum and ranging in size from a pea to an orange.

Inflammation from allergies or irritants

And inflammatory skin condition caused by an allergic reaction from contact with a substance or chemical.

What is edema?

Swelling from a fluid imbalance in the cells or from a response to injury, infection or medication.

What is a stain?

A brown or wine colored skin discoloration

What is a tan?

Caused by exposure to the sun. Change in pigmentation due to melanin production as a defense against UV radiation that damages the skin.

A pigmentation disease characterized by white irregular patches of the skin that are totally lacking pigment. The condition can worsen with time and sunlight.

An acquired, thickened patch of epidermis. Also known as a callous.

Fever blisters or cold sores.

Also known as ringworm. Highly contagious. Forms a red pattern with elevated edges.

Squamous cell carcinoma

More serious condition than basal cell carcinoma. It is characterized by red or pink scaly papules or nodules.

Retention hyperkeratosis

A hereditary factor in which dead skin cells build up because they do not shed from the follicles as they do on normal skin.

Define comedogenic

Something which can block the follicles and cause cell build up, resulting in, comedones.
