Fort Sumter
Union Fort located in South Carolina. Attacked by Confederate rebels ordered by Davis. Union declared war on the Confederacy.
Battle Strategies of the North and South
The North had the Anaconda plan. They cut off the South and put up a blockade around them. The South was going to fight a defensive war and try to get foreign help.
Bull Run
The first major battle of the Civil War. Everyone believed the war would be short. The Confederacy proved otherwise and won. Everyone saw that this war was going to be a long and brutal one. Congressmen and others from DC went to watch the battle.
Monitor and Merrimack
The first battle between ironclads. They ended up in a tie and shaped naval battles forever. Every wooden ship in the world is now outdated. New iron ships began to be created.
Antietam
Bloodiest day in United States history. Resulted in thousands dead. The war became a lot longer and deadly. This was the first major battle in the North. Gave Lincoln the chance to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
Emancipation Proclamation
President Lincoln created this to free slaves but only in states that left the Union. Slavery was still legal in states like Maryland, who did not leave. The war was now to remove slavery as well as restoring the Union.
Gettysburg
The last major battle in the North. Turning point of the war after Pickett's charge. The South war forced back and the North got better Generals.
Appomattox
Surrender of General Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant. Ended the Civil War. The Confederacy was disbanded and the slaves were set free.
Effects of the Civil War
The result was a destroyed South. They lost there workers and lives to try to rebel. President Lincoln was later assassinated. Sherman ripped apart most of the South in his march to the sea. The economy was ruined and the freed slaves could not find jobs.
