Lincoln-Douglas Debates
Lincoln challenged Douglas to a series of 7 open-air debates in Illinois to discuss the issue of slavery in the territories. Lincoln was against slavery and Douglas was for it.
Harpers Ferry and John Brown
On October 16, 1859, John Brown led 21 black and white men into Harpers Ferry (now West Virginia) to seize a federal arsenal, and start an uprising against slavery. He thought slaves would help him, but they did not. Robert E. Lee and U.S. Marines killed John Brown's men and captured Brown. He was tried for treason and sentenced to death.
Election of 1860
The 4 candidates in this election were Abraham Lincoln, John Bell, Stephen A. Douglas, and John C. Breckinridge. Abraham Lincoln won due to the fact that he had all of the North voting for him. He knew that a war was impossible to avoid at this point, and he was correct, because 1 year later, hte Civil War breaks out.
Jefferson Davis
Davis was the president of the South during the Civil War, 1861-1865. Having over 100 slaves on his cotton plantation, he was a huge slavery supporter.
Confederacy
The confederacy were the states that succeeded from America. They created their own government, and army to try to take over the North. It consisted of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas.
Southern Secession
The South detached from the North in 1861. South Carolina was the first state to remove itself. Its capital was Richmond Virginia.
