The Cherokee farmed some of Georgia's richest land and gold was there in 1829.

What made up the eastern part of the country the the Native Americans lived on and what were the tribes that lived there?

Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. The five civilized tribes were the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw.

Who passed the Indian Removal act and when?

Congress passed the Indian Removal act in 1830.

What did the Indian Removal act allow?

it allowed the federal government to pay Native Americans to move west.

What was created in 1834?

Congress created the Indian territory, an area in present day Oklahoma, for these Native Americans

What state did the Cherokee sue and why?

The Cherokee sued Georgia for not recognizing Cherokee laws.

Who ruled that Georgia had no right to interfere with the Cherokee?

Chief Justice John Marshall said that the Native Americans were protected by the federal government and Constitution, but president Jackson ruled with Georgia.

Why did the federal government persuade a few Cherokee to sign a treaty?

The federal government persuaded a few Cherokee to sign a treaty giving up their people's land. They wrote a protest letter to the government to understand them, but it did not soften Jackson.

federal troops under General Winfield Scott came to remove Cherokee from their homes and and lead them west.

It is called the trail of tears because the journey west killed many and many Cherokee cried.

The Seminole, although they were pressured in the late 1830's they refused to leave Florida and decided to go to war with the United States.

they joined forces with an African American group that escaped slavery and won.

What was Clay's and Webster's agreement with Biddle?

The agreement was that Biddle would apply with for a new charter when the past hadn't expired till 1836, and hoping that Jackson would take away the charter would lead to his defeat. Jackson rejected the bill.

Why did the strategy for gaining support for Clay's presidency fail?

It failed because most people supported Jackson veto of the bank charter. Jackson was reelected receiving 55% of the popular votes, and 219 electoral votes and Clay received 49.

How did Jackson "kill" the bank?

He ordered the withdrawal of all government deposits from the Bank and placed the funds in smaller state Banks.

How did the depression start?

the depression started with the panic of 1837 when land values dropped sharply, investments declined suddenly, and banks failed.

What was the new system?

It meant the the government would no longer deposit its money with private individual banks but instead the government would store its money in the federal treasury. Van Buren called it the "second declaration of Independence."
