a charge or claim against a person's property made to enforce the payment of money; is an encumbrance on an owner's title that will transfer with property if it were to be sold/conveyed to another person

What's the difference between a lien on real property and a lien on personal property?
A lien attaches to real property at the moment it is filed and recorded. A lien attaches to personal property only when the personal property is seized.

(vendors' liens, mechanics liens, mortgage liens, real estate tax liens, liens for special assessments and utilities)
vendor's lien
a charge belonging to a vendor (or seller of a property) for the unpaid purchase price of the property, where the vendor or the seller has not taken another lien (mortgage), beyond the personal obligation of the purchaser
How would a lien on property affect its sale?
A lien wouldn't prevent property from being sold but it would reduce the value of real estate because liens "run with the land." Any lien that gets transferred would become the responsibility of the new owner and all successive owners thereafter until the lien is paid off.
