35 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
A graph that uses vertical or horizontal bars to display data.
bar graph
A graph that uses line segments to show how data changes.
line graph
A way to display data by using a circle divided into non-overlapping sectors
circle graph
A graph used to organize and display data by dividing each data value into two parts, a stem and a leaf.
stem-and-leaf plot
The number of times the value appears in the data set.
frequency
A table that lists the number of times, or frequency, that each data value occurs.
frequency table
A bar graph used to display data grouped in class intervals. The width of each bar is proportional to the class interval, and the area of each bar is proportional to the frequency.
histogram
The frequency of all data values that are less than or equal to a given value.
cumulative frequency
The sum of all the values in a data set divided by the number of data values. Also called the average.
mean
For an ordered data set with an odd number of values, the median is the middle value. For an ordered data set with an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values.
median
The value or values that occur most frequently in a data set; if all values occur with the same frequency, the data set is said to have no mode.
mode
The difference between the least and greatest values in the set.
range
A data value that is far removed from the rest of the data.
outlier
The median of the upper or lower half of a data set.
quartile
The difference of the third (upper) and first (lower) quartiles in a data set, representing the middle half of the data.
interquartile range (IQR)
A method of showing how data is distributed by using the median quartiles, and minimum and maximum values.
box-and-whisker plot
A sample selected from a population so that each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
random sample
An operation, process, or activity in which outcomes can be used to estimate probability.
experiment
In probability, a single repetition or observation of an experiment
trial
A possible result of a probability experiment.
outcome
The set of all possible outcomes of a probability experiment.
sample space
An outcome or set of outcomes in a probability experiment
event
A number from 0 to 1 (or 0% to 100%) that is the measure of how likely an event is to occur.
probability
The ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the number of trials, or times, that an activity is performed.
experimental probability
An estimate or guess about something that has not yet happened.
prediction
Outcomes are equally likely if they have the same probability of occurring.
equally likely
The ratio of the number of equally likely outcomes in an event to the total number of possible outcomes.
theoretical probability
When all outcomes of an experiment are equally likely.
fair
All the outcomes in the sample space that are not included in the event.
complement [of an event]
A comparison of favorable and unfavorable outcomes. The odds in favor of an event are the ration of the number of favorable outcomes to the number of unfavorable outcomes. The odds against an event are the ratio of the number of unfavorable outcomes to the number of favorable outcomes.
odds
Events for which the occurrence or non-occurrence of one event does not affect the probability of the other event.
independent events
Events for which the occurrence or nonoccurence of one event affects the probability of the other event.
dependent events
An event made up of two or more simple events.
compound event
A selection of a group of objects in which order is not important.
combination
An arrangement of a group of objects in which order is important.
permutation
