What challenges do East African countries face as a result of colonialism? |
One challenge is unstable governments, which have led to genocides in Rwanda and Sudan, as well as refugee crises in Rwanda, Sudan, and Somalia. A second challenge is economic development. During colonialism, European nations used African farmland to grow and export cash crops, such as coffee. Government policies still favor growing cash crops, so it is difficult for subsistence farmers to produce enough food to meet local needs. Colonial powers stressed the production of raw materials through farming, mining, and logging. Because of this, East Africa lacks trained workers, new facilities, and equiptment to produce manufactured goods. |
