Occupation and exercise in the open air is deemed very useful for the insane: they should be employed as much as possible. Spacious yards and pleasure grounds should be provided, and music and dancing and various games may be resorted to with benefit in many cases. In the better conducted asylums, books are procured and placed at the disposal of patients; the exercise of trades and other in door employements encouraged- employments is in some cases rewarded; and out-of-door occupation is provided by means of large gardens or farms, in which patients regularly labor in proper seasons. |
