Activity

State or condition of being involved (participant); a general class of human actions that is goal-directed.

Areas of Occupation

Various life activities including activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), education, work, play, leisure, and social participation.

Client

Person served by occupational therapy in a health facility or training center.

Contrived Activities

Made-up activities that may include some of the same skills required for the occupation.

Function

Action for which a person is fit; the ability to perform.

Goal

End toward which effort is directed.

Independence

State or condition of being independent (self-reliant).

Media

The means by which therapeutic effects are transmitted.

Occupation

Activity in which one engages that is meaningful and central to one's identity.

Occupation-Centered Activities

They're performed in the natural setting (physical, social, and temporal). For example, preparing lunch at home at noon using one's own kitchen supplies is occupation-centered therapy.

Occupational Performance

The ability to carry out activities in the areas of occupation.

Occupational Therapist (OT)

An allied health professional who uses occupation, purposeful activity, simulated activities, and preparatory methods to maximize the independence and health of any client who is limited by physical injury or illness, cognitive impairment, psychological dysfunction, mental illness, or a developmental or learning disability.

Occupational Therapy

A goal-directed activity that promotes independence in function; the practice of using meaningful occupations and purposeful activities to promote function and participation in life activities.

Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA)

An allied health paraprofessional who, under the direction of an occupational therapist, directs an individual's participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance, and promote and maintain health.

Occupational Therapy Practicioner

Refers to two different levels of clinicians, an occupational therapist (OT) or an occupational therapy assistant (OTA).

Patient

Person served in a hospital or rehabilitation setting.

Preparatory activities

They help get the client ready for the purposeful activity. They include such things as: range of motion (e.g., moving the limbs through a range), exercise, strengthening, or stretching.

Purposeful Activity

An activity used in treatment that is goal directed; individual is an active voluntary participant; has both inherent and therapeutic goals.

Therapy

Treatment of an illness or disability.
