What is a variable? |
a characteristic that changes or varies over time and/or for different individuals or objects under consideration |
What is an experimental unit? |
the individual or object on which a variable is measured. A single measurement or data value results when a variable is actually measured on an experimental unit. |
What is a population? |
the set of all measurements of interest to be investigated |
What is a sample? |
a subset of measurements selected from the population of interest. |
What is univariate data? |
when a single variable is measured on a single experimental unit. Ex. GPA(variable) of a student(experimental unit) |
What is bivariate data? |
when two variables are measured on a single experimental unit. Ex. GPA(variable) AND Gender(variable) of a student(experimental unit) |
What is multivariate data? |
when more than two variables are measured on a single experimental unit. |
What are the two types of variables? |
qualitative & quantitative |
What does a qualitative variable measure? |
a quality or characteristic on each experimental unit. |
What does a quantitative variable measure? |
a numerical quantity or amount on each experimental unit. |
Which type of variable produces categorical data? |
qualitative. Ex. political affiliation |
Which type of variable produces numerical data? |
quantitative. Ex. number of passengers on a flight from LA to NYC. |
What are the two types of quantitative variables? |
discrete & continuous |
What is a discrete variable? |
Can assume only a finite or countable number of values(number of passengers on a flight) |
What is a continuous variable? |
Can assume the finitely many values corresponding to the points on a line interval.(Weight of a package) |
EX 1.2). Identify each of the following variables as qualitative or quantitative: 1. The most frequent use of your microwave oven (reheating, defrosting, warming, other) 2. The # of consumers who refuse to answer a telephone survey 3. The door chosen by a mouse in a maze experiment (A, B, or C) 4. The winning time for a horse running in the Kentucky Derby 5. The # of children in a 5th grade class who are reading at or above grade level. |
1. Qualitative 2. Quantitative(discrete) 3. Qualitative 4. Quantitative(continuous) 5. Quantitative(discrete) |
What are all the types of data? |
