Constitutional Convention
Founders realized that the Articles left the Federal Government TOO weak.
They held a Convention in Philadelphia from May to September 1787.
Originally formed to AMEND the Articles of Confederation.
AMENDING the Articles was ineffective and the Founders decided to create a new Constitution.
Virginia Plan
3 Branches of Government (Executive, Legislative, Judicial).
Legislature:
Bicameral (a Lower House and an Upper House).
Citizens elect the Lower House (the number of Representatives was based on state population).
Upper House then chosen by the officials from the Lower House.
Great Compromise
Connecticut Compromise:

This compromise bridged differences regarding Representation between the large and small states.

Proposed:
Bicameral Legislature as it exists today.
House of Representatives…based on state population, giving an advantage to large states.
Senate…2 members from each state, giving the advantage to the smaller states.

Command Economy
A economic systems where the government controls the factors of production.
Political Parties
Group of people with broad common interest who organize to nominate candiates for office, win elections, conduct government, and determine public policy.

Citizens elect candidates. These elected officials vote on laws, not the citizens. (THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE IN THE UNITED STATES!!!).
Laissez-Faire Capitalism
People are free to make economic decisions.
