Medical Direction

Oversight of the PT care of an ems system by medial director.offline medical direction consists of standing orders issued by the medical director that allow EMT's to give certain medication or perform certain procedures without speaking to the Medical director or physician. Online medical direction orders from the physician given directly to the EMT by telephone or radio.

Medical Direction

A physician who assumes ultimate responsibility for the PT aspects of the EMS system.

Protocols

A list of steps like assessments and interventions, to be taken in different situations. Protocols are developed by the medical director of the EMS system.

Designated Agent

An EMT authorized by Medical director to give medication and emergency care.

Standing orders

A policy or protocol given by a medical director that authorizes the EMTs and others to perform particular skills in certain situations.

Offline medical direction

Standing orders issues by the medical director that allow EMT to give certain medication or perform certain procedures without speaking to the medical director or other physician.

Online medical direction

Orders from the o duty physician given directly to an EMT in the field by radio or telephone.

Level of evidence 2

These studies use concurrent controls without true randomization. Because they are often retrospective and because the methods are more difficult to control without randomization, these types of studies are often less reliable.

911 system

A system for telephone access to report emergencies. A dispatcher takes the information and alerts EMS or the fire or police department as needed. Enhanced 911 has the additional capability of automatically identifying the callers phone number and location.
