The first Hanoverian King George I did not speak english, and di not know the British system very well, so their chief ministers were allowed to handle Parliment.

In April 1775 fighting broke out between British & colonies in Lexington & Concord Mass. The second Continental Congress met and formed an army called the Contiental Army, lead by George Washington as Commander in chief.
Declaration of Independence
Written by Thomas Jefferson. Approved July 4, 1776 and followed the ideas of John Locke. It declared the colonies independence from Britian. Colonies free and independent states absolved fromall allegiance to the British Crown.
Yorktown
General Cornwallis was forced to surrender to combined Am. & French forces led by Washington at Yorktown in 1781. The British decided to end the war.
Federal System
Power is shared between national governmant and state governments.
Articles of Confederation
the American's first constitution. The government under the Articles lacked power to deal with the new nation's problems.

In 1789 the new congress proposed 12 admendments, and the first 10 were approved by the states is the Bill of Rights.
