North and South, Slave and Free

The Americans thought that the slaves weren't full human and that slaves didn't have rights only freed slaves did. North only had free slaves.

Slaves' Legal Status

They could do anything with the slaves but they couldn't be set free.

Rural and Urban Slaves

Most slaves were from the urban slaves because they worked in farms. Most of the slaves were "hired out".

Free Blacks in the South

Almost half of the African Americans lived in the South. The white southerners didn't like the free blacks and thought they were dangerous and that they had to be controlled. They had restricted rules and couldn't do things other people could.

Free Blacks in the North

African Americans in the North had more freer lives.But they were still judged because of their skin color. They couldn't vote. The segregation decided to separate the whites and blacks.

The Economics of Slavery

Only the wealthy whites could afford to buy slaves.
