Aromatic Compounds

A compound that contains benzene. Usually have fragrant odors. Benzene had a 6C ring and only 1H attached to each Carbon.

Amine

A class of organic compounds that contains a nitrogen atom bonded to one or more carbon atoms.

Amide

A class of organic compounds in which the hydroxyl group of a carboxylic acid is replaced by a nitrogen group.

Alkynes

Hydrocarbons that contain a carbon-carbon triple bond.

Alkyl group

An alkane minus one hydrogen atom. Names like the alkanes except a yl ending replaces ane.

Alkenes

A hydrocarbon that contains a carbon-carbon double bonds.

Alkanes

Hydrocarbons containing only single bonds between carbon atoms.

Aldehyde

An organic compound with a carbonyl functional group and at least one hydrogen atom attached to the carbon in the carbonyl group.

Alcohol

A class of organic compounds that contain the hydroxyl (-OH) group bonded to a carbon atom.

Carbonyl group

A functional group that contains a double bond between a carbon atom and an oxygen atom (C=O).

Carboxyl group

A functional group found in carboxylic acids composed of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups.

Carboxylic acid

A class of organic compounds that contains the carboxyl functional group.

Cycloalkane

An alkane that has a ring or cyclic structure.

Ester

A class of organic compounds that contains a -COO- group with an oxygen atom bonded to carbon.

Ether

A class of organic compounds that contains an oxygen atom bonded to two carbon atoms (-O-).

Functional group

A group of atoms bonded in a specific way that determines the physical and chemical properties of organic compounds.

Haloalkane

A type of alkane that contains one or more halogen atoms.

Hydrocarbons

Organic compounds consisting of only carbon and hydrogen.

Hydroxyl group

The -OH functional group.

Isomer

Organic compounds in which identical molecular formulas have different arrangements of atoms.

Ketone

A class of organic compounds in which the carbonyl group (C=O) is bonded to two carbon atoms.

Organic Compound

Compounds made of carbon that typically have covalent bonds, are nonpolar molecules, have low melting and boiling points, are insoluble in water, are are flammable.

Structural isomers

Organic compounds in which identical molecular formulas have different arrangements of atoms

Thiol

A class of organic compounds that contains the (-SH) functional group bonded to a carbon atom.
