Good public health, high birth rate, low epidemics, and many immigrants coming in made the population boom more than Europe and most importantly Britain.

The Know-Nothings were memebers of the Supreme Order of the Star Spangled Banner which consisted of nativist groups. The group had several demands including banning Catholics or foreign born from holding public office, more restirctive naturalization laws, and literacy tests for voting. The order was very secret and used the password "I know nothing", which is where there name came from.
