Physical Change
A change in one or more of matter's physical properties.
Chemical Change
Occurs when matter changes chemically into an entirely different substance with different chemical properties.
The Law of Conservation of Mass
Matter cannot be created or destroyed. Even when matter goes through physical or chemical changes, the total mass of matter always remains the same.
Signs of Chemical Change
Gas bubbles are released.
Something changes color.
An odor is produced.
A solid comes out of a solution.
Reversing Chemical Changes
Since new substances are produced, these changes cannot often be undone. You can't change a fried egg back to a raw egg. Some can be reversed, but only through chemical change. Removing tarnish from a penny with vinegar. The acid reacts with the tarnish.
