The Hericlitian position
All change is substantial change. There is no accidental change.
(Material objects have no unity or self identity).
*An object DOES NOT stay the same from time 1 to time 2 to time 3...for ex: a piece of wood at second 1 is not the same at second 2*
The Parmenidian position
There is no change AT ALL. Neither substantial nor accidental.
(All things are in unity and have self identity).
What do we learn from Parmenides and Hericlitus?
If we don't have a conception of SUBSTANCE, then we either must deny change or deny stability.
