Meninges

Three connective tissue coverings that encircle the spinal cord and brain

Dura mater

The most superficial of the three spinal meninges. forms sac from the level of the foramen magnum, continues the epineureum.

Epidural space

A space between the spinal dura mater and the vertebral canal, containing areolar connective tissue and a plexus of veins.

Arachnoid mater

Middle meninx composed of loosely-arranged collagen and elastic fibers.

Pia Mater

extremely vascular inner meninx which include.

Subarachnoid space

Space between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater which contains the cerebrospinal fluid.

Denticulate ligaments

thickenings of the pia mater that project laterally and fuse with the arachnoid mater and inner surface of the dura mater betwen the anterior and posterior nerve roots of spinal nerves on either side.

Cervical enlargement

enlargement extending from the fourth cervical vertebra to the first thoracid vertebra. Nerves to and from the upper limbs arise from the cervical enlargement.

Lumbar enlargement

Extends from the fourth cervical vertebra to the first thoracic vertebra.

Conue medullaris

conical portion of the spinal cord inferior to the lumbar enlargmement which ends at the level of the intervertebral disc between the first and second lumbar vertebrae in adults.

Filum terminale

Extension of the pia mater that extends inferiorly and anchors the spinal cord to the coccyx.

Cauda equina

Roots of nerves that arise from the inferior part of the spinal cord and do not leave the vertebral column at the same level as they exit from the cord, instead angling inferiorly in the verltebral canal from the end of the spinal cord like wisps of hair.

Spinal nerves

Paths of communication between the spinal cord and the nerves innervating specific regions of th ebody.

Roots

Two bundles of axons that connect each spinal nerve to a segment of the cord.

Dorsal root

contains only sensory axons.

Dorsal root ganglion

contains the cell bodies of sensory neurons

Ventral root

Contains axons of motor neurons, which conduct nerve impulses from the CNS to effector organs and cells.

Gray commissure

A narrow strip of gray matter connecting the two lateral gray masses within the spinal cord

Anterior median fissure

A deep, wide groove on the anterior (ventral) side.

Posterior median sulcus

Shallower, narrow furrow on the posterior, (dorsal) side.

How many pairs of spinal cords

31

Central canal

small space in the center of the gray commissure which extends the entire length of the spinal cord and contains cerebrospinal fluid.

Anterior (ventral) white commissure

connects the white matter ofthe right and left sides of the spinal cord

Levels of brachial nerve division in order from central-most to most peripheral

Roots -> Trunks -> Divisions -> Cords -> Branches
