Tissue

A group of fully specialized cells that perform similar functions.

Epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous

Epithelial tissue

Covers the surfaces of the body, lines body cavities, and covers organs. And forms the secretory portions of the glands.

Connective tissue

Binds organs together and provides protection and support for organs

Muscle tissue

Cells are specialized for contraction

Nervous tissue

Tissue that forms the brain, spinal cord, and nerves

Serous membrane

Epithelial membrane that lines the external surfaces of organs and the body wall in the central cavity.

Mucous membrane

Epithelial membrane that lines tubes and cavities that have openings to the external environment

Matrix

Extracellular substance in connective tissue

Fibroblast

A cell that produces fiber and ground substance in connective tissue

Cartilage

A connective tissue with a relatively rigid semisolid matrix

Bone

A hard connective tissue with a rigid matrix of calcium salts and fibers.

Adipose tissue

A connective tissue that stores fat

Exocrine gland

Have ducts that carry their secretions to specific areas

Endocrine glands

Lack ducts, their secretions calls hormones, are Carrie's by the blood supply to organs within the body to regulate their funtion

Simple epithelium

Single layer of cells

Stratified epithelium

Multiple layers of cells

Fibroblasts

Most common cell. Responsible for producing the ground substance and protein fibers

Matrix

A large amount of extracellular substance produced by cells. Composed of ground substance and protein fibers. Used to classify connective tissue

Adipose tissue

Large accumulation of fat cells
