Because the French felt forced into electing Urban VI by the Italians, they eventually deposed Urban and elected Clement V. Different countries in Europe supported the two different popes and this led to a split within the Roman church. This contributed to the Protestent Reformation because it questioned the Pope’s authority and created divisions within the Church.
