Filing an IFR flight plan

91.173: file for Class A airspace and controlled airspace in IMC

File via: FSS, DUATS, by radio

File at least 30 mins prior to flight

Processing the IFR plan

Pilot filed IFR plan

Processed by Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC)

Route is analyzed by controllers for delays, restrictions, inop navaids

Once processed, clearance sent to:

Departure airport, centers covering your flight, destination airport

Canceling IFR flight plan

Can cancel if in VMC and/or outside of Class A

Tell controller “cancel my IFR flight plan”

After cancelling: change transponder to 1200 and fly VFR altitude

ATC separation and services are cancelled

Radar service is terminated

IFR flight plan is automatically cancelled on landing at destination airport with a control tower.

If not a controlled airport, you MUST call to close it.

Composite flight plan (VFR/IFR)

If VFR first:

Before entering IMC, “Close VFR flight plan, activate IFR flight plan” with ATC

If IFR first:

After IFR portion, close IFR with ATC, then call FSS to activate VFR flight plan

Receiving an IFR clearance

Mandatory when flying in IMC

At airport with tower, contact Ground or Clearance Delivery

At airport w/I tower:

FSS in the field

RCO

By telephone

If unable to receive clearance on ground, take off and get IfR clearance before entering IMC

Pop-up clearance:

Flying VFR and need to pick up IFr clearance

File with Center or FSS

Non-tower clearance take off times

Separate traffic

Release Time:

Specifies earlier take-off time

Traffic or weather related

Hold for release:

May not depart until given a release time

Clearance void time:

Given at airport without a control tower to separate traffic

“Clearance void if not off by...”(ATC expects you to be airborne by a certain time)

If not airborne by void time, contact ATC no later than 30 minutes after void time to declare intentions or obtain new clearance.

Elements of IFR clearance

CRAFTE

Clearance limit

Route

Altitude

Frequency

Transponder code

Expect further clearance time (EFC)

Clearance limit

How far you are allowed to go

Delays or traffic may stop you from flying all the way to destination

ATC will issue a hold clearance unless one is depicted

Route

What route you are allowed to take

“Cleared as filed” allows you to fly the route that you planned and filed

Route may differ from what is filed

DPs and STARs may be issues where as well

Altitude

What altitude you are allowed to climb to

May also tell pilot to expect a climb

“Climb and maintain 8,000’, expect 10,000’ 15 minutes after departure”

Frequency

First frequency you will use after you depart

Transponder code

Set your transponder to the code and Ident when requested

EFC

Expect further clearance

Will be given if you have a clearance limit other than your destination

Sample clearance

“Helicopter 814SC, cleared to Boston as filed, climb and maintain 6,000’, departure frequency 125.05, squawk 3798”

“As filed” refers to route only!

Sample clearance 2

“ helicopter 814sc, cleared to Boston, after you take off turn right heading 180, intercept PEASE 150 radial, climb SE, expect radar vectors to Victor 3, Then as filed. Climb and maintain 3,000’, expect 5,000’ 15 mins after departure, departure frequency 125.05, squawk 2543”

If in doubt, ASK!

Make sure you are able to do what they want:

Altitude? Time? Equipment?

Clearance read back

On ground: read back entire clearance

In flight:

Altitude assignment

Radar vectors

Anything you need verification on?

Read back all airborne clearance if you are unsure what they said

Cruise clearance

ATC tells pilot to “cruise” at an altitude “Cleared to PEASE, cruise 7,000’”

May fly at any altitude between minimum IFR alt and up to assigned alt

Pilot may vacate an alt within cruise clearance without notifying ATC

If you do notify ATC of a descent, you cannot climb back up

VFR On Top

Requested by pilot on IFR flight plan

Pilot may choose a VFR alt

Pilot is responsible to see and avoid other aircraft

Comply with VFR altitudes and WX minimums

Prohibited in Class A
