System unit
A case that contains electronic components are part of the system unit
motherboard
aka System Board, main circuit board of the system unit.
Chip
a small piece of semiconducting material usually silicon on which integrated circuits are etched.
processor
AKA: CPU, interprets and carries out the basic instructions that operate a computer
microprocessor
incorporates the functions of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) on a single integrated circuit
Multi-core processor
single computing component with two or more independent actual processors which are the units that read and execute program instructions
dual-core processor
is the unit that reads and executes program instructions, which are fixed-length or variable-length chunks of data.
quad-core processor
contains four cores (e.g. AMD Phenom II X4, the Intel 2010 core line that includes three levels of quad-core processors, see i3, i5, and i7 at Intel Core)
control unit
the component of the processor that directs and coordinates most of the operations in the computer
Arithmetic logic unit (ALU)
A unit in a computer that carries out arithmetic and logical operations
clock speed
The operating speed of a computer or its microprocessor, defined as the rate at which it performs internal operations and expressed in cycles per second (megahertz)
gigahertz (GHz)
equals one billion ticks in the system clock per second
digital
recognize 2 discrete states : on and off
Binary system
A system in which information can be expressed by combinations of the digits 0 and 1
bit
A unit of information expressed as either a 0 or 1 in binary notation
memory
The part of a computer in which data or program instructions can be stored for retrieval
kilobyte
equals exactly 1024 bytes
megabyte
1 million bytes
gigabyte
1 billion bytes
terabyte
1 trillion bytes
volatile memory
computer memory that requires power to maintain the stored information
nonvolatile memory
does not require a maintained power supply. It has been less popularly known as temporary memory.
RAM
Random-access memory (RAM) is a form of computer data storage. Today, it takes the form of integrated circuits that allow stored data to be accessed in any order
memory module
he means of storing data content within the transponder
memory slots
what the motherboard holds memory modules
cache
An auxiliary memory from which high-speed retrieval is possible
memory cache
a small piece of fast, but more expensive memory, usually «static memory^(1)», used for copies of parts of «main memory»
L1 cache
A small cache integrated in a processor that provides quick access to the most recently used data.
L2 cache
has the same purpose as L1 cache, but is usually not integrated into the processor.
advanced transfer cache
Intel's name for the L2 cache contained within their processors, starting with the Pentium III "Coppermine"
read-only memory
Memory read at high speed but not capable of being changed by program instructions
flash memory
Memory that retains data in the absence of a power supply
firmware
Permanent software programmed into a read-only memory
nanosecond
1 billionth of a second
expansion slot
A place in a computer where an expansion card can be inserted
adapter card
in computing is a printed circuit board that can be inserted into an expansion slot of a computer motherboard to add functionality to a computer system.
peripheral
electronic equipment connected by cable to the CPU of a computer; "disk drives and printers are important peripherals"
sound card
A device that can be slotted into a computer to allow the use of audio components for multimedia applications
video card
A printed circuit board controlling output to a display screen
memory card
n electronic flash memory data storage device used for storing digital information
USB flash drive
An external flash drive, small enough to carry on a key ring, that can be used with any computer with a USB port
ExpressCard slot
Special type of expansion slot that holds a pc card or an express card module respectively
PC Card
A printed circuit board for a personal computer, esp. one built to the PCMCIA standard
ExpressCard module
can be used as a removable flash memory device that primarily is used today to enable traditional notebook computers and tablet pcs to access the internet wirelessly
port
A socket in a computer or network into which a device can be plugged
USB port
A plug-in for special cables that provides a fast method for data transfer.
connector
A device for keeping two parts of an electric circuit in contact
Hi-speed usb
The fastest data transfer speed of up to 480Mbit/s available for USB 2.0 compliant computers and peripherals. See USB.
FireWire port
A plug in for special cables that provides an extremely fast method for data transfer.
port replicator
A Docking station or port replicator provides a simplified way of “plugging-in” an electronic device such as a laptop computer to common peripherals. ...
docking station
A device to which a portable computer is connected so that it can be used like a desktop computer, with an external power supply, monitor, data transfer capability, etc
SCSI port
where some computers (including many Macintosh models) attach peripheral devices such as a disk drive or printer. A SCSI port provides faster transmission rates than a serial or parallel port.
bus
a subsystem that transfers data between computer components inside a computer or between computers.
system bus
the bus that carries data between the CPU and the northbridge.
expansion bus
made up of electronic pathways which move information between the code of a computer system, including the CPU and RAM, and peripheral devices
bay
an opening inside the system unit in which you can install additional equipment
drive bay
A space inside a computer in which a floppy disk, hard disk, or disk drive can be accommodated
power supply
the component of the system unit that converts the wall outlet AC power into DC power
Ac adapter
a type of power supply - typically those that are embedded in an over-sized AC plug. Other names include plug pack, plug-in adapter, adapter block, domestic mains adapter, or power adapter
