Pulmonary ventilation

Breathing/ ventilation. Mechanical process of moving air in and out.

External respiration

Alveoli/ Capillary gas exchange, serves to oxygenate the blood while eliminating CO2 in lungs

Internal respiration

Cell/capillary gas exchange, responsible for delivery of O2 to cells and the removal of CO2

Cellular respiration

Aerobic metabolism that occurs in the cells that produce energy in the form of ATP and release CO2 & water as by-product

First phase of Cardiac arrest

Electrical phase

First 4 minutes heart still has good supply of O2 & glucose. Also where metabolism is still maintained.

2nd Phase of Cardiac arrest

Circulatory

4-10 minutes after arrest. O2 stores are reduced and cells begin to shift to anaerobic metabolism.

3rd Phase of Cardiac arrest

Metabolic

10 mins or greater after arrest. Heart is starved of O2 and glucose. Acidic build up has reached the point of severe damage and tissue begins to decay
