Life Course Approach
1) focuses on transitions and trajectories
2) Provides a valuable way to understand change
3) Individual life trajectories are linked with trajectories of others, especially family members
4) Recognizes that individuals and families are dealing with stresses unique to this historical period (ex. Environmental concerns, economic uncertainties, homelessness, concerns about adequate medical care, globalization, etc.)
The six stages of the family life cycle.
1. Leaving home: single young adults
2. The joining of families through marriage: the new couple
3. Families with young children
4. Families with adolescents
5. Launching children and moving on
6. Families in later life

Developmental Stress
---Life cycle Transitions
---Migration
---Horizontal Stressor
Horizontal Stressor
includes the anxiety produced by the stresses on the family as it moves across time
Reasons why Life Course Development can vary between races/cultures
Cultures have different backgrounds, norms, and traditions. Although life courses differ for races/cultures they go through variations of the same phases
Example of how racial/cultural differences would IMPACT how families from two different cultures would handle developmental stress differently
In stage four (Families with adolescents), "some parents perceive completeness of information as a sign of deception, while others see incomplete answers as an indication of lying."
Three factors that affect the communication in that family system (Based on Stage three: Families with Children)
1) Parental responsibilities and restrictions
2) The gratification child rearing holds for them as a couple
3) The marital intimacy and stabilty
All affect the communication in the family system.
