When water, air and other substances react with the minerals in rocks. Ex. Rust forming on a car
Chemical Weathering
Breaks apart rocks without changing their chemical composition. Ex. breaking a rock into two pieces, ice wedging, frost, wind, tree roots
Mechanical Weathering
Cycle of freezing and thawing that breaks rocks apart. Water enters cracks, freezes and thaws
Ice Wedging
Occurs when a material such as iron is exposed to oxygen and water. A form of chemical weathering
Oxidation
The pattern of weather that occurs in a particular area over many years. Mechanical weathering more prevalent in cold climates (ice wedging). Warm wet climates are known for more chemical weathering, ex. rainforest area has lots of water
