Map
a drawing or plan of part of the Earth's surface.
Scale
the ratio or relationship between a distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground.
Scale can be shown three ways
1. Representative Fraction
2.Linear Scale
3. Statement of Scale

Show's the features of the map
Straight-line distance
The shortest distance between two points.
Curved-line distance
used to measure the distance along any line that is not straight. e.g. roads, railways and rivers.
The National Grid
Covers Ireland and some of its sea areas. Consists of 25 sub zones each named with a letter of the ALPHABET.
Co-ordinates
found at the side of each sub zone.
Grid references
Helps is give a location using co-ordinates on a Map.

Compass
gives us directions, north, south, east and west.
Height
how far we start on ground in relation to sea level. example 300 meters above sea level.
Slope
also called gradient, show's the change in the height of land above sea level.
Relief
Refers to the shape of the physical landscape, includes height and land-forms (mountains).
Drainage
Refers to the ways that water flows in the landscape.
