Vascular Plants

Plants that contain xylem and phloem which are vascular tissues.

Seed bearing plants, gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Pteridophytes, ferns, lycophytes, and horsetails.

Lignin

Strengthens and makes plants rigidity, is a hard organic compound.

Supports cellulose fibers in the cell walls.

Gives power.

Xylem

A non living tube shaped tissue.

Found in vascular system plants.

Carries the water from the roots to the rest of the plant.

Phloem

Transports sugar and organic nutrients to the plant.

Found in the vascular system plants.

Elongated tubes.

Tracheids

Conducts water and supports the xylem.

Made of long, thin cells that have tapered ends and hardened walls.

Maintains a structure.

Vessel elements

When combined with other cells forms a tube that transports water and minerals.

Is a short wide cell.

Needs to form with other cells to function.

Cohesion

When molecules of the same substance bind together.

Just like water molecules they stick together.

Mold together.

Adhesion

When two substances that are different are attracted.

Opposites attract.

Peanut butter and jelly.

Sieve tubes

Phloem cells in a column.

-found in plants

- many of the same cells together.

Endosperm

Provides nourishment to developing embryo in seeds of flowering plants.

Made from the Union of sperm cell and a large cell with 2 nuclei

Cotyledons

A single or double seed leaf of a flowering plant embryo.

First leaves of a seedling

A angiosperm

Apical Meristems

Allows the shoot/root to increase in strength.

Produces auxin

Gives stability

Seed coat

The outer covering of a seed that is tough and protective.

When it's cold we put on coats

Warm, shell like.

Germination

When seed begins to sprout.

Beginning to grow.

Opening a present.

Primary growth

The growth in vascular plants.

Equivalent to growth spurts in humans.

Changes the plant.

Node

The part of the stem of a plant that connects other leaves, forms a bump.

Connector

Part of the branch

Root cap

It is found at the rip of the root, is a tissue.

Baseball caps are worn on out heads ^

"Cap it off"

Epidermis

The tissue that is the outer layer of a plant.

Our skin is a epidermis

Made out of cells

Cuticle

Is the outmost layer of a living tissue. Prevents water loss and infection of parasites.

Kind of like a bandage.

Not dead like the cuticle on our finger nails.

Vascular tissue

Apart of the vascular system. Water and nutrients are conducted through the tissue.

Transports

Provides important factors

Ground tissue

A tissue made up of 3 cells, parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma. Forms pith/cortex of leaf.

Takes up space

A base/support for the plant

Secondary growth

The process that which causes the stems and roots to thicken

Elongation occurs

Causes a change

Vascular cambium

Is found between the xylem and phloem.

Found in vascular growth

Is the middle of a "sandwhich"
