What makes up the skeletal system?

Individual bones, connective tissue, and marrow

What are the functions of the skeletal system?

support, protection, levers- movement, mineral storage (Ca++ - 90% and PO4--), and hemopoiesis by red bone marrow

Define hemopoiesis

hemo means blood, poie means make, sis means condition of, so condition of making blood

diaphysis

dia means across, physis means growth; the shaft part of the bone

epiphysis

epi means above, physis means growth; the expanded head of each end of the bone

this replaces the epiphyseal plate after a person is done growing; where the two parts of the bone meet (epiphysis and diaphysis)

epiphyseal line

dense white osseous tissue, has onionlike cross sections called concentric lamellae and layers of matrix arranged around a central canal.

compact bone

loosely organized form of osseous tissue, has spicules and trabeculae

spongy (cancellous) bone

space inside compact bone which contains bone marrow
