Bronchitis

Inflammation of the bronchial tree, which includes the right and left bronchi, secondary bronchi, and bronchioles. Results in congested airway

Bronchiectasis

A dilation of the bronchial airways. The dilated areas become flabby and scarred. Can remain localized or spread in the lungs. Secretions pool in these areas and are difficult to cough up. Infection is common.

Etiology of Bronchiectasis

Secondary to another chronic respiratory disorder, such as cf, asthma, tb, bronchitis. Airway obstruction, tumor are predisposing factor.



Infection, inflammation weaken bronchial walls and reduce ciliary function.

Signs and Symptoms of Bronchiectasis

Recurrent lower respiratory infections. Sputum is copious and purulent. Extreme airway inflmmation can cause bloody sputum. Dyspnea with minimal exertion. Wheezes, crackles may be auscultated. Fever present during infection. Cor pulmonale (right sided heart failure) clubbing fingers may occur with chronic disease such as COPD
