Function of the left atrium
Receives blood returning to the heart from the pulmonary veins. The pulmonary veins extend from the left atrium to the lungs and bring oxygen - rich blood back to the heart.
Function of the right atrium
Receives blood returning to the heart from the superior and inferior venae cavae.
Function of the left ventricle
Is located in the bottom left portion of the heart below the left atrium. Thickest of all the chambers; pumps oxygenated blood to tissues all over the body.
Function of the right ventricle
Is located in the lower right portion of the heart below the the right atrium and opposite the left ventricle. Is responsible for pumping deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
