Electromagnetic Induction
The phenomenon of inducing voltage by changing the magnetic field in a coil of wire.
Ex: ATM card |
Faraday's Law
The induced voltage in a coil is proportional to the product of the number loops and the rate at which the magnetic field changes within those loops. Can induce voltage by moving the loop near the magnet or magnet near the loop.
Generator
An electromagnetic induction device that produces electric current by rotating a coil within a stationary magnetic field.
Transformer
2 different coils of wire on opposite sides of an iron core. Alternating current is used to power the primary, frequency of periodic changes in the magnetic field is equal to the frequency of the ac.
Faraday
Discovered electromagnetic induction. Electric current can be produced in a wire simply by moving a a magnet in and out of a coiled part of the wire. Electricity can be produced by magnetism. (England)
Henry
Disciovered electromagnetic induction. No battery needed; only the motion of a magnet in a wire loop. Voltage is caused or induced by the relative motion in a wire or a magnetic field. (US)
Voltage
Electrical pressure or a measure of electrical potential difference. Makes current, created due to a change in motion through a magnetic or electric field.
V=electrical potential energy/unit of charge |
Induce
Created due to a change in or motion through a magnetic or electric field.
Step up
A transformer that increases voltage and decreases current (converts a low voltage to a high one). When the secondary coil has more turns than the primary. Then the alternating voltage produced in the secondary coil will be greater produced in the primary.
Step down
A transformer which reduces the voltage.
Power
Rate at which work is done or energy is transformed equal to the work done or energy transformed divided by time; measured in watts.
Power Transmission
Large currents in wiress produce heat and heat and energy loss so power is transmitted great distances at high voltages and low currents.
Iron Core
Easy for the domains to align and be magnetised.
Primary Coil
The coil connected to the power source is the primary.
Secondary Coil
The other coil
AC Current
Rotation of coil causes a current
DC Current
Orderly line; ex: battery
