What is the Dreyfus Affair of 1894?

High ranking army officer, Alfred Dreyfus, was accused for spying for Germany. Neither he nor his lawyers were allowed to see the evidence against him. The court convicted and condemned him to life on Devil's Island, a small island off the coast of South America. By 1896, new evidence pointed to a different officer, still the army refused a new trial. In 1906, the court finally cleared Dreyfus and restored his honor.
