Efficient producer hypothesis:

health disparities exist because better-educatedindividuals are more efficient producers of health than less-educatedpeople. Several reasons are given forwhy this might be so.

Thrifty phenotype hypothesis:

health outcomes are determined in part bydeprivation(taking, keeping away, need) that occurs in early childhood or evenbefore birth. The deprivation may in part be income or financelevel determined.

Direct income hypothesis:

health disparities(difference) arise because therich have more resources to devote to health investment.

Allostatic load hypothesis:

health disparities exist due to differences in stresscaused by life challenges and changing environments.

Productive time hypothesis:

SES differences depend on health disparitiesbecause health is an important input into productive time creation and jobsuccess, including wage or pay rates and limiting time missed due tosignificant illness.

Fuchs hypothesis

says that both health and SES disparities aresimultaneously caused by innate differences in the willingness to delaygratification.

Those who are more patient and focus more on thelong run end up with higher levels of both health and social status

Those who have a higher discount rate, and focusmore on the short run, tend not invest much in education, health, and SES.
