Peritoneum

Membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers the organs within it

Retroperitoneal space

The area posterior to the peritoneum between the peritoneum and the back

Visceral pain

Poorly localized, dull, or diffuse pain that arises from the abdominal organs, or viscera

Parietal pain

intense pain that arises from the parietal peritoneum, the lining of the abdominal cavity

Tearing pain

Sharp pain that feels as if body tissues are being torn apart

Referred pain

Pain that us felt in a location other than where the pain originates

Appendicitis

Infection of the appendix; nausea, vomiting, pain in the LRQ

Peritonitis

Result of ruptured spleen, appendix, or trauma.. painful or rigid abdomen also fever and other signs of infection

Gallstones

RUQ pain may radiate to shoulder

Pancreatitis

Inflammation of the pancreas; common with patients with alcohol problems. Pain may radiate to back and or shoulders

GI bleeding

May be gradual or sudden and massive.. dark black or maroon stools, tarry in appearance.

AAA / abdominal aortic aneurysm

Ballooning or weakening in the wall of the aorta as it passes through the abdomen. Gradual abdominal pain that's sharp, tearing, and may radiate to the back
