Cataract

Clouding of the lens causing decreased vision. (Degenerative disease, protein in lens aggregates and clouds vision, linked to aging)

Diabetic retinopathy

Retinal effects of diabetes mellitus include microaneurusms, hemorrhage, dilation of retinal veins, and neovascularization (new blood vessels form in the retina.) Macular edema occurs as fluid leaks from the blood vessels into the retina and vision is blurred. Exudates (fluid leaking from the blood) appear in the retina as yellow-white spots. Laser photocoagulation is helpful in patients whom hemorrhaging on the retina has been severe. Also vitrectomy is done to resolve non resolving hemorrhages onto the vitreous jelly. Corticosteroids, which promote regression of abnormal blood vessels, are used to decrease fluid leakage and neovascularization.

Chalazion

Small hard cystic mass (granuloma) on the eyelid. chalazion are formed as a result of chronic inflammation of a sebaceous gland (meibomian gland) along the margin of the eyelid. Treatment often requires incision and drainage.

Hordelum

Localized, purulent inflammatory staphylococci infection of a sebaceous oil producing gland in the eyelid.

Macular degeneration

Progressive damage to the macular of the retina. Severe loss central vision.

Nystagmus

Repetitive rhythmic movements of one or both eyes.

Retinal detachment

Two layers of the retina separate from each other.

Strabismus

Abnormal deviation of the eye.
